Sushi Review

Instead of going bar-hopping, Mark and I went sushi-hopping. There are at least 3 sushi spots right next to our new apartment. We decided to try Blue Ribbon first. The restaurant looks fancy and authentic from the outside and every time we walk by it, it’s packed. That’s always a good sign. We didn’t have to wait more than 10 minutes for a table and were welcomed with hot hand towels, a favorite of mine. All the people working there, including the sushi chefs were of some Asian descend – another good sign. I’m not really a sake fan but I was a good sport and we ordered a large bottle of hot sake to go alongside our yellowtail/scallion, spicy blue crab and eel and avocado rolls. The rolls we usually get at other establishments are cut into eight pieces, these were cut into six tiny pieces. We tried to take our time but finished them shortly after they were placed in front of us. We finished the sake and decided to go to the sushi restaurant across the street to satiate our appetite.
The other place is called JPan and although not at big as the last restaurant, it was packed as well and their prices are about half of the other’s. We had another sake, fresh oysters, a roll and some sashimi. I actually can’t remember what roll we did have but it was good and worth going back for. Their oysters were unfortunately covered in cocktail sauce which the server forgot to mention when we ordered. If you go there for oysters, make sure you ask what comes with them.
We also tried their fried banana with ice cream and that’s something we weren’t crazy about. They fry the banana in tempura batter so it’s not sweet when served. I’d probably skip the dessert next time and just get a bunch of rolls and/or sashimi.
There is one other sushi spot in the same vicinity, however by the time we ate at the second place, we were full and broke for the night. We’ll see how the third one pans out next time.
